HEIC, HEIF, AVIF, SVG, BMP and TIFF are supported as input formats. HEIC, AVIF, BMP and TIFF output are encoded locally in your browser. SVG is rasterized when converted, and multi-page TIFF input currently uses the first image page.

Compare a photo converted from PNG to JPEG and WebP

The same mountain landscape is shown as an original PNG, two JPEG outputs and a WebP output. Compare the actual file sizes and inspect fine details without changing the 1448 × 1086 px resolution.

Sizes in the table are measured from the original PNG and the actual JPEG/WebP files, not from the previews shown here. The two JPEG outputs have different file sizes; their precise encoder settings have not been supplied. The interactive photos and enlarged crops are separate, lightweight WebP previews and may introduce minor additional display artifacts. No full-resolution source image is automatically loaded or offered for download. Try the converter above with your own photos to compare format options; AVIF is supported by the tool but is not included in this measured example.

Choose the right image format for the job

Different image formats are useful for different reasons. JPEG is widely supported and efficient for photographs, PNG is useful for lossless graphics and transparency, WebP offers a strong balance between quality and file size, while newer formats such as AVIF or HEIC can be useful when storage efficiency matters.

This converter is designed for quick format changes without routing your image through a remote conversion service. Add a supported file, choose the output format and quality options that are available for that format, then download the converted copy. The original file on your device is not replaced.

How it works

1

Choose an image

Add a supported source image. The tool detects the source format and prepares a local preview in your browser.

2

Select an output format

Choose the format that matches your compatibility, transparency, quality or file-size requirements.

3

Convert and download

The browser creates the new file locally so you can download it without sending the original image to a conversion server.

Which image format should you choose?

  • Use JPEG for photographs when broad compatibility and smaller files are more important than transparency.
  • Use PNG for logos, UI graphics, screenshots or images that need a transparent background and lossless pixel data.
  • Use WebP when you want a modern web-friendly format that can support both compression and transparency.
  • Use AVIF when very efficient compression is useful and the software that will receive the image supports the format.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting an image always reduce its file size?

No. File size depends on the source content, output format, quality and compression method. Converting a JPEG to PNG can make the file larger, while converting some images to WebP or AVIF can reduce size.

Will transparency be preserved?

Transparency can only be preserved when the chosen output format supports an alpha channel. Formats such as PNG and WebP support transparency, while standard JPEG output does not.

Does conversion change the image dimensions?

The converter is intended to change file format rather than resize the image. If you need different pixel dimensions, use the Resize Image tool.

Why can some conversions take longer than others?

Formats such as HEIC and AVIF may require heavier browser-side decoding or encoding than JPEG or PNG. Processing time also depends on image resolution and the speed of the device.

Is the original file modified?

No. The tool creates a new converted file for download. Your original image remains unchanged on your device.
